H. Lincoln Foster and his wife, Laura Louise Foster, are among the best known people in the rock garden world. They created one of the most famous North American rock gardens, Millstream House, beginning in 1949. Cuttings from a Rock Garden , edited by Norman Singer, was published by Timber Press in 1997. This book contains the story of Millstream and a compilation of their writings as they appeared in various rock garden society publications.
The Fosters had published many articles in various publications. The second division of this book is a collection of the best of those articles. Each article ends with the initial of the person who wrote it. Some of the articles are cover a general topic such as "American Plants for the Woodland Garden" while others deal with specific plants. The articles provide careful descriptions of the plants along with information on its cultivation. The Fosters also discuss the history of the plant in cultivation along with the individual responsible for introducing the plant to gardeners. Cuttings from a Rock Garden should be on every rock gardener's shelf. Much of the history of this hobby and the plants that we so eagerly grow is covered in this book. The book is well written and easy to read. The information it contains will have you dreaming of next summer when you can try out some of the garden ideas or plants suggested. Bulbs for the Rock Garden by Jack Elliott was published in 1996 by Timber Press. This book is extremely valuable for rock gardeners since it brings together species of bulbs which fit easily into rock garden situations including trough gardens. Chapters 1 and 2 discuss climate, habitat, pests and diseases and the use of bulbs in frames, under glass, in peat gardens, in grasslands, in the shade or even in dry shade. Greenhouse growing of bulbs in pots is also included. The information presented is quite similar to that presented in any good book about bulbs.
