This is the season of year when people often feel a let down from the excitement of the holidays. Some are just plain stressed from exhaustion. Others are feeling the grief of remembering family members who have died during the year. A feeling of depression overtakes many people as they face the long winter season. Let's look at how gardening can positively boost your spirits.

Horticulture therapy as proven itself in many programs dealing with mentally or physically disabled people. Deeply depressed people have come out of their shell and responded well to growing plants in a greenhouse of other setting. Since this has been very successful for the severely depressed, think how it can help you overcome the day-to-day blues we frequently experience in response to circumstances beyond our control. Gardening is good therapy for several reasons.

First, plants depend on us totally for their existence if we have taken them from their natural environment to grow in artificial conditions. Second, taking time to groom a plant releases stress through physical activity. Third, seeing a well groomed plant or perhaps discovering the first flower bud on a seedling is a spirit booster. Fourth, if you grow plants from seeds, you will always have the excitement of watching new growth as it moves from a tiny seedling to a full size plant.

Widows or Widowers have found that growing plants from those presented at a funeral for their spouse is a good way of handling the grief of the loss. Developing an interest in indoor gardening can help you cope with physical disability that makes outside gardening difficult. Upset with your kids? Spend some time grooming a patch of your garden or even a single plant. Are you angry at someone? Why not take that anger out on a patch of weeds before you strike out at your family or friends?

Tip for the Enabling Garden

This is the time for sales. Next time you are near a toy store or toy aisle, look for one of the plastic sleds for kids. This can be either rectangular or round in shape. This is the perfect thing for loading with gardening supplies and pulling up and down your garden beds as you work. You can extend the rope handle if necessary. If you look around, you'll probably find one on sale for $5 or less! No one will guess that you are callling it a garden tool instead of a sled.
