TITHONIA 'FIESTA DEL SOL'

Tithonia is frequently called the Mexican sunflower. These plants thrive on heat and humidity. They reach a height of 2-3 feet with orange daisy-like flowers that are 2-3 inches in diameter. Tithonia is recommended as a butterfly nectar plant. The AAS states "Basically pest free, not even deer find the hairy leaves of Tithonia rotundifolia worth eating." If you try these plants, let us know if they really are deer resistant.

CATHARANTHUS 'STARDUST ORCHID'

I love the looks of Catharanthus, also called Vinca, in my garden. This plant should reach 14-16 inches in both height and width. Each flower is 1 ½ inches in diameter. The flowers have white throats and orchid colored petals. This species is considered pest and disease free and resistant to drought. I've found its best to keep vinca foliage dry if possible. The All-America Selections committee has designated this plant as the "bedding plant of the year."

Next week, I'll cover the perennial of the year. Until then, good gardening to you!
