Indoor Geraniums-Part 4: Rose-Scented Pelargoniums

The rose scented pelargoniums are prized by many herb growers. They are even grown commercially for their oil which is used in perfumes and cosmetics. Chances are that the "rose oil" listed in your favorite perfume came from a pelargonium rather than a rose. The following cultivars are often available at your favorite nursery. If you don't find them with the colorful "geraniums", be sure to check out the herb area.

Pelargonium 'Attar of Roses' comes in both a normal green form and a variegated form. The leaves have 3 deep lobes carrying a strong rose scent. The variegated form has whitish-gold splashes on the leaves. Both plants are fairly large with lavender flowers. Be sure to give it room to grow.

'Old-Fashioned Rose' (Pelargonium graveolens) is quite common too. The leaves have a good rose scent and strong indentations. The plant is attractive in containers or planted out in the garden.

My favorite is P. 'Rober's Lemon Rose'. The leaves remind one of furry looking tomato leaves. It combines my favorite scent (lemon) with the rose scent. This plant is frequently found in the herbs section of nurseries and catalogs, even if other scented geraniums are located with the flowering pelargoniums.

'Lady Plymouth' is a sport of the 'old-Fashioned-Rose'. The leaves are grayish-green, and the form called 'Grey Lady Plymouth' has white edging around the leaves. These plants are often seen grown into topiaries. The flowers are lavender.

Having just received an order from Richters, I can enthusiastically recommend them as a quality source for scented pelargoniums. Several of my plants are already taking the proper shape for starting scented pelargoniums topiary trees giving me an excellent headstart on next year's creations. Please refer to previous articles in this series for other sources. However, as with most nurseries, many of their names are simply wrong. This makes it very difficult for the collector!

Next week, we'll finish our discussion of scented pelargoniums with the fruit, nut, and pungent scented plants. Until then, good indoor gardening to you!
