I'm Dreaming of a Garden ChristmasChristmas is fast approaching! I see Christmas decorations in many of my favorite stores already. I thought I would present my gift suggestions early so you have time for ordering them! In my part of the country, it is difficult to find any garden supplies during this season. It seems to me that the merchants forget that gardeners enjoy receiving new supplies for their hobby even in the middle of a snowstorm! Let's take a look for some "on-line" gifts that could be ordered and save your friends and families the frustration of going from store to store looking for those special items we all crave. Bonsai Bonsai is an ideal hobby for a gardener with limitations. If you concentrate on tropical plants that need to remain indoors all year round, this makes a fascinating hobby and requires little space. It does require some special pots and tools which would make ideal gifts this season. Tokonoma Bonsai carries many tools and pots. They have a bonsai pot made primarily of mica (a mineral) that sounds fascinating. Bonsai by Tiny Trees is another excellent source for supplies and pots. Perhaps a correspondence course in bonsai would be just the thing for your favorite gardener. Hydroponics Hydroponics makes a rewarding hobby for many people. Various systems exist ranging from single plant planters to major systems capable of supplying fresh veggies year round. Like all specialities, the tools required seem to be a bit pricey. I was lucky enough to find a used Baby Bloomer to begin my hydroponics experimenting with. This is one of the lower priced kits that contains everything a beginner needs to get started. Garden Tools Garden tools designed for people with special needs are hard to find on the web or in your local store. Check out Gardenscape's enabling tools for excellent gift ideas. I received an email on October 29 about this new tool to make it easier to turn outside faucets on. Check it out. If your loved one has arthritis or carpal tunnel, it may be just the gift this year. Seeds Gift certificates for seeds and other garden supplies are always welcome. I enjoy dealing with Burpee and Park Seeds because both have consistently stood behind the quality of their products and have returned money if seeds failed. I appreciate this quality of customer service. Memberships If your favorite gardener specializes in certain plant species, perhaps a year's membership in the appropriate plant society would be welcome. Check out the on-line location for further details. Some now take credit cards on-line while others just give information on how to join.
