Lone Pine Publishing has produced five books just for Michigan gardeners. They are doing the same series of books for the other states too. The five books published so far for Michigan are: Perennials for Michigan, Annuals for Michigan, Trees and Shrubs for Michigan, Roses for Michigan and Gardening Month by Month in Michigan.
The Trees and Shrubs for Michigan book was reviewed in detail here and the Annuals for Michigan and Perennials for Michigan books were reviewed here here. This spring, Roses for Michigan and Gardening Month by Month in Michigan were released. These books are reviewed in this article. Nancy Lindley and Laura Peters. Roses for Michigan. Lone Pine Publishing. 2004. Roses have not faired well in my gardens. Therefore, I was delighted to see a book on this topic written specifically for Michigan. It is my hope the information presented will enable me to succeed with roses. Michigan experiences temperatures ranging from a low of -40F to -5F depending on where you are in this State. As you might expect, the Upper Peninsula experiences lower average temperatures than the southern portion of the Lower Peninsula. The authors cover these variations in their introduction. They conclude that there is a rose for every location in Michigan. Roses in History share several points of interest to those who love roses. Terminology is always important when talking about a particular plant genus. The "Anatomy & Rose Terminology" pages will help you understand the remainder of this book. The authors discuss "Roses in the Garden" and "Getting Started". These sections suggest locations for roses in your landscape. They also introduce you to color, fragrance, flower form, substance, hips, hardiness, plant form, and thorns. These are rose features you should understand before selecting roses for your landscape. I am grateful the authors strongly suggest getting your soil tested before preparing a rose bed. If you need good tips on selecting roses at your local garden center, be sure to read the section called "Buying Roses". "Planting Roses" provides step by step directions in both written form and photograph form. I learned that I should soak the rose roots in a bucket of muddy water for 12-24 hours before planting. This is something I didn't know about and may have contributed to my lack of luck with roses! Perhaps some other information in this section will provide you with just the tidbit of information to help you overcome rose growing problems.
