New Plants for 2004

SILVER FALLS/EMERALD FALLS DICHONDRA

Dichondra is a low growing, groundcover type plant. It can be used in hanging baskets, flower pots, or as a green border along your flower bed. I tested this plant in a "trough type" garden and was very pleasantly surprised at how fast 4 small plants filled the 24 inch by 8 inch container. It is available in silvery-green and green forms. This is another plant you will have to look for in catalogs and garden centers. This is an annual in colder zones of the country and should function as a perennial in the southern zones.

JUNGLE GOLD IMPATIENS

Are you tired of the same colors in impatiens? Jungle Gold offers a new color to the shade garden - yellow/gold. The individual flowers are exquisite. It grows well in constantly moist soils. I learned the hard way that this impatiens cannot handle even one episode of drying out or it dies! May I suggest you add some moisture-holding crystals to your pot of this lovely plant or around the root-ball if you place it in your shady border?

Next month I'll talk about other products or plants that I trialed in my garden this past year.
