So what happens during Puffer poisoning? Symptoms and outcome depend greatly on the amount of toxin ingested. The toxin contained in Puffer flesh causes paralysis, which usually begins 10-45 minutes after ingestion. This paralysis usually begins as tingling of the tongue and inner surface of the mouth (the first surfaces to come into contact with the toxin. Other common symptoms include nausea and vomiting, dizziness, and weakness. In fatal cases, death occurs between six and twenty-four hours after ingestion, and results from the paralysis of the muscles used for breathing.

There is no antitoxin available for poisoning by Fugu Puffer, so medical treatment is geared toward management of symptoms until the body can flush out the toxin on its own.

If you choose to eat puffer and experience any of the above symptoms, get to an Emergency Room immediately! Make sure you know how much of the fish you actually ate.

NOTE: Many of the above symptoms can also be seen during allergic reactions in sensitive people. Virtually any food can cause a reaction, so if any of the above symptoms are seen after eating any food (especially foods you've never eaten before), seek medical assistance as soon as possible.
