POISON: PART FOUR

Different poisons have different effects on the body. Some poisons, such as drain cleaners, can cause serious chemical burns, both externally and internally. Other poisons, such as an overdose of medication, can have negative effects on body organs and functions. Regardless of the type of poison the victim is exposed to, the most important step you can take is to call your local poison control center. Since the effects of poisoning can vary greatly, depending on the type and quantity of the poison, each situation is unique. The qualified, trained staff at you local poison control center, along with their vast database of poisons and their effects, can help you determine the most appropriate course of action to follow when dealing with exposure to poison.

IN ALL SUSPECTED CASES OF POISONING, OR EXPOSURE TO POISON, CALL YOUR LOCAL POISON CONTROL CENTER!

IF THE POISONING VICTIM IS UNCONSCIOUS, NOT BREATHING, OR IS HAVING SEIZURES, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY!

FOR POISONS ON THE SKIN:

*Remove any clothing that the poison may have been spilled on.

*Place the affected body part under lukewarm running water for 15 minutes. If a large portion of the body has been exposed, place the victim in the shower so all areas are exposed to running water.

*After 15 minutes, wash the affected area(s) with mild soap and water, and rinse thoroughly.

*Call the poison control center for further instructions specific to your situation.

FOR POISONS IN THE EYE(S):

*Use lukewarm water to flush the poison out of the affected eye(s).

*Pour the water slowly onto the eye from a height of 2-3 inches above the eye.

*Continue to flush the eye for 15 minutes. DO NOT wash the eye with soap and water.

*Encourage the victim to blink continuously while the eye is being flushed.

*Call the poison control center for further instructions.

FOR POISONS THAT ARE INHALED (BREATHED INTO THE LUNGS):

*Get the victim into fresh air immediately.

*Take care to avoid breathing any fumes as you assist the victim.

*Open any doors or windows in the area to dissipate the toxic fumes.

*If the victim is experiencing difficulty breathing, or is not breathing, CALL 911.

*Initiate rescue breathing if the victim is not breathing.

*If it is not necessary to call 911, be sure to call the poison control center for further first aid instructions.

FOR INGESTED CHEMICALS OR HOUSEHOLD PRODUCTS: (cleaners, detergents, bleach, ammonia, etc.)

*If the victim is unconscious or having seizures, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY.

*If the victim is able, have him/her drink one glass of milk or water.

*Call the poison control center.
