Many common plants have poisonous properties, ranging from skin irritation to death. It's important to know if you have houseplants that have toxic qualities, especially if you also have children or pets. The following is a list of hazardous plants, and their effects. This list includes many common indoor and outdoor plants. However, for a complete look at poisonous plants, their qualities, and their effects, visit your local library. There are several excellent reference books that pertain exclusively to poisonous plants.

PLANTS WITH TOXIC PROPERTIES

Avocado: leaves

Azalea: leaves and nectar

Black Dogwood: bark and fruit

Dewdrop: berries

PLANTS WITH OTHER HARMFUL PROPERTIES

Anthurium: leaves and stem will burn the mouth

Baby's Breath: skin irritation

Black Calla: throat and mouth irritation

Black-eyed Susan: skin irritation

Blue Taro: will burn the mouth

Boxwood: skin irritation and nausea (if ingested)

Caladium: will burn the mouth

Calla Lily: will burn the lips and mouth

Dieffenbachia: leaves will burn the mouth

Elephant's Ear: will burn the mouth

Fishtail Palm: will burn the mouth and irritate the skin

Flowering Maple: skin irritation

Hanging Geranium: skin irritation

Philodendron: Leaves will burn the mouth and cause skin irritation

Pothos: skin irritation and diarrhea (if ingested)

Pyracantha: berries and thorns can cause injury

Schefflera: skin irritation
