POISON: PART ONE© Kathleen Newton
Each year, millions of people are exposed to some sort of poison. Approximately 900,000 of these victims seek emergency medical attention. 90% of all poisonings happen in the home, and more than half involve children under 6 years of age. Most incidents of accidental poisoning can be prevented, if safety precautions are implemented in the home. Over the next few weeks, we'll look at aspects of poisoning, including first aid and emergency care for poisoning, and lists of common household poisons and their effects. This week, I've compiled a list of poison control centers in the United States, their addresses, and their emergency phone numbers. Find the number of the poison control center closest to your home, and post it close to your phone. Post the number NOW, when you don't need it. That way, the number will be immediately available if you ever do need it in an emergency.
NOTE: Unless otherwise noted, emergency numbers listed are only accessible within the state the center is located.
