Alphabet Letters in Embroidery

The alphabet won't be plain anymore if you incorporate any number of stitches when embroidering them. Here are just a few easy ways to beef up the alphabet in your works of art.

First thing you want to do is draw your letters on the fabric with a fabric pencil.

Select any one of the following to embroider your letter:

1. Outline your letter using the back stitch. Then run the satin stitch horizontally from bottom to top of letter.

2. Fill your letter with split stitches. Run the satin stitch horizontally from bottom to top of letter.

3. Run the satin stitch horizontally from bottom to top and then outline the letter with the stem stitch.

4. Fill your letter with any of the embroidery decorative or fill stitches: the circular blanket stitch, the French Knot, the chain stitch, the satin stitch star, the closed herringbone, the flat blanket stitch or any of the stitches you use in embroidery.

You can get even more creative if you use stitches from hardanger embroidery, punch embroidery, or x-stitch. The following site has a description of stitches you can use in your letters:

As always, you may want to practice the stitching first before you embroider on your final project.
