Elvis' Birthday Bash

Cutting the cake at her party for what would have been Elvis' 68th birthday, is the lovely Kathy Westmoreland . Kathy, as you all know, was the girl Elvis introduced as "the little girl with the beautiful high voice" during all his concerts of the '70s.

First I’d like to say how wonderful it has been getting to know Kathy as a person. Kathy and I met online after she agreed to do an interview a few years ago for Suite 101 and we became instant friends.

Melody Sanders and I were in Las Vegas at the 2003 Elvis Convention with our new book Walk a Mile in Their Shoes in January and had the pleasure of spending the weekend with Kathy. What a delightful person she is.

The line began forming in front of the steps leading to Kathy’s hotel Suite at the Stardust Hotel long before the party began. Just the mere thought of mingling with Kathy Westmoreland was a dream come true for her fans. For the last seven years of Elvis’ life Kathy was there, right along side of him night after night, with her beautiful voice blending with his. They were also very close off-stage, and this was a once-in-lifetime chance for the fans to meet her personally, and hear her stories.

Kathy really knows how to put on a party. As Elvis CDs played in the background, Ray Walker of the Jordanaires, Diana Magrann, John Loos, Garyelvis Britt, Stuart McCloud , Olav Wischulke and of course Melody Sanders and myself, just to name a few, were there sharing Elvis memories. Note the tootsie pops and Pepsi’s everywhere. Kathy told us how Elvis would often walk around with a Pepsi in his hand, and a Tootsie pop in his mouth. It was just great hearing her personal memories of the man we only saw on-stage. That's Ray Walker of the Jordanaires in the tan pants and brown jacket enjoying cake and mingling.

Look hard amongst all those good looking guys in jumpsuits and black leather, and you'll find Diana Magrann standing in front of the doorway on the left, and 5'2" Melody Sanders standing somewhere in the middle of the group of tall guys in jumpsuits on the right.

Thats Kathy harmonizing with Garyelvis Britt in the kitchen. She loved clowning around with the guys. Behind them hanging on the wall are some of the clothes Kathy wore in concert. The white dress is the actual one she wore at Elvis' funeral.
