The Day Elvis Died


If you were an Elvis fan on August 16,1977, I'll bet you can remember with total recall the moments surrounding that horrible news that Elvis had died.

It could almost be called The Day The Music Died, but because he truly gave his life for his fans and their love, for both he and his music, Elvis Music will always go on. That day we may not have lost the music but we did lose a precious soul.

Like several other instances in my life, that day there was a quick parallel with Elvis. I happened to be in Tennessee that day, not in Memphis, but in Nashville. I had went with the man who would later become my husband, and his family, to Opryland. Even though it was the day before I was to take my ACT for College, I decided instead of resting and studying, I'd take the four hour trip north and spend the day having fun. We took time between rides to see all the stage shows, and the rock and roll show of course, included Elvis music. The Country Legends show had a young man come out and sing and dress like Elvis. After a long hot day we returned home and dropped his family off before he took me home. As we were pulling out of the driveway we heard the news on the radio. First thought was, "What, that can't be, they must have said something different and I misunderstood". I wondered if those people who had given tribute to Elvis that day knew that The King was gone. They could have been performing at the time he left the world. Then it sunk in, and all those "what if's" and "Wish I'd's" started to hit. I had been in Memphis a couple of years earlier and could have went by Graceland just to see it and who knows, maybe could have seen Elvis. Only eight months before he had come to my home town in concert. I had thought about it but trying to get tickets was going to be
