A few weeks ago we ask the question,
"What's the Secret of Elvis' Staying Power."
I now proudly introduce the winning essay.
Often in the hurried world in which we live, we long for change and something new to suit our fair-weathering fancies. Technology changes everyday to keep up. We buy and sell on the stock market in almost seconds. Virtually every evening news cast is brimming full of new information of all that has just went on in our world that day. The music industry is certainly no different. Groups and artists come and are gone just as quickly as they dawned on the scene. So we are left to ask," What gives Elvis his ' staying power'. On a cold winter day in 1968, a two year old girl sat motionless in front of her television. Nothing could draw her attention away from the vision on screen. She sat quietly, and moved her head in time with the music. Minutes turned in to an hour, and still the girl remained fastened tight to the excitement. Her mother was astonished at how the child appeared to be in a trance-like state. Eventually, the trance was broken. She did not hop up abruptly or even turn to her mother to speak; but only said," Mommy, he's beautiful." That little girl was me, and the vision that held me so tightly was the movie "Flaming Star". From that moment on I cannot remember not loving Elvis Presley. While I do not myself remember that instance, and am told that story by my Mother, I can still feel the stirring in my heart, and the joy of listening to his music and be in essence swept away. As I grew older and watched more of his movies, and then began to find more enjoyment in listening to his recordings, time seemed to hover, and he was captured in that leather black suit, or the white jumpsuit; hair shining ebony, and that absolutely enchanting upper lip curl. While I cannot attempt to speculate why his other millions of fans love him so, I can only speak of my admiration of him. It isn't possible to sum up the emotion, or put into a neat package all the ways his music has effected Go To Page: 1 2
