Our conversation continues with the winner of the 1999 "Worldwide Images of Elvis National Championship," Irv Cass.
June: When and where did you first perform publicly? Irv: At the age of 18 on stage at an American Legion Club. It was for a Jerry Lewis Telethon for MDA. I dressed up as Jerry Lewis complete with buck teeth, the little glasses, and, of course, used the voice. I used to do many different voice impersonations. June: What are your very first memories of Elvis? Irv: I don't remember exactly when I discovered Elvis - I do remember hearing his music as a child and enjoying him in high school. June: How long have you been performing impersonations of Elvis ? Irv: About 7 years... June: Did you ever get to see Elvis in person? Irv: No, unfortunately, I went to get tickets to his last concert here in South Bend, IN. I found out that the tickets were all sold out in one and a half hours. June: What outfits do you wear during your usual concerts? Irv: It varies - I wear the beaded fringe jumpsuit, the Concho, the purple flowered shirt with the gold trophy belt, the Aloha jumpsuit, the Tiger, the Peacock, the black leather from the '68 Comeback Special. I am developing a movie tunes set with the short coat and slacks that Elvis wore in some of his movies. June: Where do you purchase your stage wardrobe ? Irv: Many of my outfits come from B & K Enterprises in Clarksville, IN. I do have a number of private seamstresses that have made costumes for me too. June: What songs do you enjoy doing the most? Irv: I enjoy the love ballads from the concert years when Elvis' voice was fully developed - "The Wonder of You," "Just Pretend," "My Way," "Kentucky Rain," and "Suspicious Minds." June: What are your favorite types of venues? Irv: I enjoy the big shows, theaters, etc., because of the excitement generated by large crowds and the pleasure of meeting many new people. However, I also enjoy smaller private parties because I can interact with individuals - that's a lot of fun. June: Are there any memorable stage experiences you'd like to leave us with? Irv: One time I performed with Chris Burke, the star of the TV series, "Life Goes On." The show was for the benefit of physically and mentally disabled youngsters. When I sang "Jailhouse Rock," about 25 of the kids joined me on stage, dancing and singing with me. It really touched my heart to see how much joy it brought into their
