Travis DeVall in Concert
The "Beach Party" in Des Moines, Iowa with Travis DeVall and Jan & Dean was about to begin. Travis DeVall was scheduled for two shows. His first show would consist of songs from Elvis movies, and his second would be favorites from the The Aloha from Hawaii concert. Hearing about Travis for months now, I was anxious to see what all the excitement was about. Performing as Elvis for only four years, he's received some very prestigious awards. Among them,The National Champion as the # 1 Elvis Entertainer in the United States, and Most King-Like Voice in the International World Elvis Competition , held in San Diego, California. Comfortably positioned at the back of the packed room, my intentions were to cover this event in a serious and calm manner. For his first show, Travis made his entrance in army attire. He appropriately began his medley of songs with ones from the movie GI Blues. To get the full effect of his voice, I closed my eyes for several minutes. Then suddenly I heard the crowd scream. I looked up just in time to see Travis shed his break-away army attire. In one swift swoop, he sent it flying behind him. as the crowd went wild. If he didn't have the audiences' full attention before, he most certainly had it now. It was at that moment I left behind my friend, my notes, and my composure, as I joined the crowd at the front of the stage. Travis Devall kept his audience totally captivated as he rocked us straight into the beach movies with Rock-a-Hula-Baby, never missing a beat. His second show was truly spell-binding, as he made his entrance in the much loved white jeweled jump suit and scarves. He mesmerized us with CC Rider, Polk Salad Annie, Steamroller Blues, Burning Love, Hurt and Fever, just to name a few. He sang them all the greats in true Elvis style. His voice was amazing; his Elvis-like moves were impeccable. Jan & Dean's crew remarked after the show, "His voice was incredible. He can sure draw a crowd to him, and heat them up, white hot!" I walked away from the concert with a blank notebook, but I had a Travis DeVall scarf around my neck and a big smile on my face. If you're in the Washington DC area on July 1 look for Travis at the Roots of Rock & Roll Concert at the Smithsonian Institute at 12:30 and 6:30 pm.
