Darren Lee Part TwoWe now continue with our exclusive interview with Darren Lee, winner of the 1997 World Elvis Association Competition in Memphis Tennessee. Darren not only continues our answers, but also tells us some personal, moving, on-stage experiences. Question: Which Elvis song do you enjoy performing the most personally? Darren: "Walk A Mile in My Shoes," "Lawdy Miss Clawdy " and "Peace in the Valley." Question: What's the song you enjoy most while watching the king himself perform ? Darren: "Don't". Question: What attire do you wear on-stage when performing Elvis ? Darren: White/red sports jackets, black and white shoes, bright shirts, black pants, and white belts. I wear a black leather outfit for my second set and a burgundy suit from the '68 comeback special. I wear a white suit with red tie for "If I Can Dream." Question: What types of places have you performed in and where were they ? Darren: I've performed in Canada, Palm Springs, Indiana, Vegas, Memphis, New York, Australia and Chicago. I've performed at hotels, bars, theaters, legions, Elvis conventions and contests. I then ask Darren if he could give leave us with one true experience, to get a feel of what it's like being Elvis Tribute Artist. He gave us three. The Humorous Times One night I received an unexpected surprise after performing a string of Elvis hits to a packed house. I looked down and discovered my fly had been open through the entire, energetic, first set. The Bad Times Another unforgettable experience was the time an overzealous fan managed to join me on stage. I somehow managed to keep singing and remain polite, even though she was totally, "in my face." Then suddenly, out of nowhere, her boyfriend came rushing toward me. Ready to fight, he came at me at full speed. I ducked to avoid his swing. He somehow ended up decking his girlfriend. One minute she was in front of me and the next she was out cold. The next morning, thinking the terrible incident was over, my band and I started out for what we thought would be a quiet breakfast. I opened the door, only to discover her boyfriend had been waiting for us all night. He immediately broke a guitar over one of the band members heads. Totally out of control, he proceeded to, "clean everyone's slates." We finally managed to get everything under control and left for breakfast. But as I sat over my milk that morning, I spent the whole time looking over my shoulder. The Loving Times One of my most memorable experiences, however, happened when I was traveling
