Surrounding Graceland

As we stroll quietly along a path behind the mansion, we begin to see the many sides of Elvis. He was so much more than just the extraordinary entertainer we all watched in fascination.

The first side of Elvis we notice is that of a loving Son. Elvis had a very close relationship with his dad and it shows as we make our way through Vernon's office. It was here in this very room the famous "home from the army footage" was recorded. We watch the tape as intently now as we did in 1960.

Elvis the Rebel comes to life as we stroll along the yard and gaze at the exact place he and his buddies had their famous battle games. They would routinely play here using fireworks as their weapons.

Elvis the Sports Enthusiast is evident as we tour his 2,200-square-foot, two-story racquetball building. The entrance to this elaborate building is a bi-level lounge area. Complete with leather furniture and a piano, this is where he relaxed and sang just hours before his death.

Images of Elvis the proud father make their appearance as we notice the swing set sitting quietly in the sunset. Visions of Lisa Marie playing joyously as a small girl instantly make its way into our mind.

Elvis the Animal Lover is unmistakable as we walk beside the barn. Elvis had two horses for his personal riding enjoyment - Rising Sun, a quarter horse, and Bear, a Tennessee walking horse.

Elvis's Graceland has also been home to numerous lucky dogs, donkeys, peacocks, guinea hens and a chimpanzee, just to a mention a few. The peacocks lost their home at Graceland and had to be donated to the Memphis Zoo. It seems they got a little rowdy and scratched his Rolls Royce.

Elvis the Friend purchased horses For his entire entourage and their wives. He loved playing and racing in this pasture with his companions.

At the end of our trail we find ourselves in Meditation Gardens. We follow the line of mourners in silence. Next to Elvis lie the bodies of his father Vernon, his mother Gladys, and his grandmother Minnie Mae. Beside them a tiny marker for the memory of Jessie Garon Presley, his stillborn twin.

As we enter the shuttle, we glance back for one last look.

The driveway is lined with its traditional blue Christmas lights. Christmas trees are glimmering both inside and outside the house, just the way Elvis liked them. In the front yard the same life-size Nativity scene.
