Hope Lange

We were recently saddened by the news of the death of yet another actress who starred opposite Elvis in a movie. This time it was the beautiful Hope Lange, who starred as the lady psychiatrist that counsels Elvis in "Wild in the Country."

Just two short months ago October, we lost Julie Parrish who is known for role in Paradise, Hawaiian Style.

Before that, in 2001, it was Deborah Walley who we lost, who was the drum playing tomboy in "Spinout."

Hope Lange was born Hope Elise Ross Lange on November 28, 1933 in Redding Ridge, Connecticut.

Hope Lange was pronounced dead at Saint John's Health Center in Santa Monica on December 19, 2003 from an infection caused by an intestinal inflammation known as ischemic colitis.

Hope is survived by her husband Charles Hollerith, a former theatrical producer and vice president of the Actors' Fund of America, a son, actor Christopher Murray, a daughter, Patricia Murray, and two grandchildren.

MARRIAGES

Don Murray from 1956 to 1961, whom she met during the filming of Bus Stop. Their marriage lasted only a few years, but they remained friends, and eventually, performed in the two-character play, "Same Time Next Year," together.

Alan Pakula, a director/producer, was her second husband. Their marriage lasted from 1963 to 1971.

Charles Hollered, Jr. was her final husband, to whom she remained married from 1986 until the present.

MEMORABLE FACTS

Spending 12 years on Broadway, she made her film debut alongside Marilyn Monroe and Don Murray in Bus Stop in 1956 as the memorable Elma, who sits next to Marilyn on the bus and listens to her stories. It has been reported that Hope was so beautiful, that Marilyn asked that Lange's hair be dyed brown, so as not to compete with her own blond hair.

AWARDS

In 1957 Hope earned an Oscar nomination for her supporting role in "Peyton Place".

Hope captured two Emmy awards for lead actress in a comedy series for her role in "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir" in both 1969 and 1970.
