on this compilation, fits in perfectly. Swati Natekar's Kabhi Unke Milan Ke Asha Ne
could have come off an Indian movie soundtrack, but its gentle, loping pace swings
between dancehall and rocksteady. Coming after the Dreadzone track, it's a perfect
transition.
Talvin does kick the tempo up a notch with After, by dZihan and Kamien. Coming off the bright, lazy sound of Dub Tractor, I can see why Talvin thought this was a good song to follow that track; After's full of major-key swirls and string flourishes. Changing up the pace so suddenly, however, is jarring, even if the beat is the same dancehall as the Swati Natekar track, only faster. The oddness of having a quick song in the mix is made doubly strange because the next song on the compilation, by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan remixed by Massive Attack, is downtempo again. It's got the typical Massive Attack moody rumble and hip-hop beat, and doesn't go at all well with After. Bar the one glitch on the compilation, it's perfect music to study, or just to relax to. It's more diverse in sound than Talvin's own music, yet almost totally cohesive. The nearly perfect structure of the mix shows us Talvin's a good DJ, as well as a great musician. Now I'm going to try to find the other seven Back To Mine compilations. I'm sold. Go To Page: 1 2
