Some say that tape-swapping hurts the music industry, but many say it helps. Speaking for myself, I'm much less likely to buy a CD by a DJ I haven't heard. Fifteen dollars is a lot to risk for what could turn out to be a bomb. If I swap a tape with a friend and like what I hear, I'll buy the CD and go to hear the DJ spin. I believe there's no way to stop the spread of free music, either through tape-swapping or through downloading of MP3s. Studies have shown that sales don't decrease because of these practices. I respect artists enough to go buy their music if I've heard and liked it for free, and I know many music lovers who feel the same. My only advice to those of you who swap tapes: if you like it, support the DJ. Buy the album, see the show. Then he or she can keep making that music you love so much.
