I'm in a silly mood this week, so I thought I'd bring you some salacious stories from the world of electronica. Some of these are from official sources, others are wild rumor. True or not, you'll enjoy them.
At the Winter Music Conference in Miami, Florida, in March, Detroit independent label Intuit-Solar, home to ghetto tech artists DJ Assault and DJ Godfather, had a showcase party at Club Madonna in South Beach. The club's a strip joint, and several music industry types got complimentary lap dances as songs like Ho's in This House played. In October, the Crystal Method (Scott Kirkland and Ken Jordan) were arrested in a Los Angeles home along with six other people and charged with cooking a large quantity of GHB, a popular party drug. They spent the good part of a day in jail, but then were released without being formally charged. They claimed to have had no involvement in or awareness of the drug's presence in the house, which they'd stopped by to deliver copies of their album Vegas. During the making of his 1998 album Let's Get Killed, David Holmes found his title after being chased through the South Bronx by eight men who were trying to steal the audio equipment he was using to tape conversations and ambient sound for the album. After reading his unauthorized biography Moby: Replay - His Life And Times, by Martin James, Moby posted a diary entry on his website apologizing for being a 'jerk' in the past. 'I've realised that I have been a truly annoying and awful man at times, especially regarding my career,' he says. 'Sheesh, what was wrong with me? Why did I have to pick musical fights with people? I love Aphex Twin and Orbital, why did I criticize them? I do believe that every time someone criticizes me now that I'm completely deserving of it, for in the past I used to be such a jerk. Who knows, maybe I'm still a jerk. Probably. I should go to J.A. (Jerks Anonymous). Although I guess now that I've outed myself as a jerk I'm not quite so anonymous.' Martin James recently spoke to electronica fan site BurnitBlue.com about his book, and told a Moby story that wasn't included in it. After playing several shows at The House of Blues in Los Angeles, Moby became a bona fide star. Celebrities lined up outside his dressing room after the shows. But Moby used to keep them waiting-not because he had developed a big head, but because he smelled bad! He'd been wearing the same clothes to perform in each night, and wanted to clean himself up before facing anyone post-show.
