LTJ Bukem set up his own label, Good Looking Records, after he cut his first ever track, Logical Progression. When Good Looking licensed a compilation of Bukem's early tracks to London Records, LTJ found himself breaking big in the US; he was the first drum n' bass artist most Americans had heard. He went on to make his Progression Sessions series, which so far includes five albums and remixes artists as diverse as Jodeci and French MC Conrad, who's also signed to Good Looking. Last year, Bukem released his long-awaited double solo album, Journey Inwards. It features a live jazz-fusion band, complete with flute. Songs like Sunrain are R&B-flavored, reminiscent of early Soul II Soul. Watercolors' beginning sounds like a 70s summer movie soundtrack, lazy and brass-filled.
These are only a few of the top dogs of drum n' bass. There are hundreds more artists, some only putting out one track and then fading away or coming back under a new name, others releasing yearly what are almost concept albums in the way they hold the listener's attention for the whole record. The music can be jazzy or heavy, sunny or dark. There's a size and style of drum n' bass to please everyone. Go out there and find your favorite.
