Electronic Music Radio on the Internet

  • Live365 -- Has tons of house stations. A search under Techno brought up hundreds, as did searches under House and Dance. The stations are rated in order of how many listeners are currently tuning in. I listened to a station called Thedownbeat. It was pleasant, melodic, rainy-afternoon-type house. A playlist was not available, which might have been nice. I also listened to the station Poundhouse Afterhours which played some very mellow UK garage. DJ Poundhouse knows his turntables; the mix was excellent and the transitions between songs were smooth. Unfortunately, his playlist wasn't available either.
  • Interface -- From the UK. Interface bills itself as the world's first pirate radio station on the net. It lists DJs and broadcast times (in GMT) on the Web site. It's also got a DJ Webcam; I had fun watching two pasty English guys who, in between bobbing their heads to the tracks they were playing, seemed to be having a discussion about something to do with the turntables. I went to the Web site and discovered they were DJ Nick Sekulic and a friend, spinning house, nu-skool and techno from 1900-2000 GMT on a Tuesday night. The set I heard this Tuesday was very techno-heavy-lots of bleeps, no vocals, and not much melody. This is music to dance to-no chilling-out allowed. There was no DJ chatter like the kind I'd heard on traditional UK pirate radio, however, and I missed it.
  • KCRW -- Operating out of Santa Monica Community College in southern California. Their electronica show is Jason Bentley's Metropolis, which broadcasts weeknights 8-10PM PST, then is rebroadcast the next day 5-7AM PST and 12-2PM PST. The site also has an archive of past shows available to listen to, which includes chats with artists like David Holmes and Timo Maas. Bentley plays pretty much everything that could possibly fall into the category of electronic music, from the jazzy, percussion-happy St. Germain's "Rose Rouge" to the sparse Miguel Miggs house remix of Britney Spears' "Stronger."
There are thousands more Internet radio stations out there that play electronic music. I've only covered a fraction of the English-speaking world. Next time I'll profile Internet dance music radio from other countries.
