Growing Older Can Be Great

© Marci Stocks

For those of you who remember me as the past Caregiving editor, it is great to be back! And for those who do not know me, I hope you will find my articles helpful. My passion is for the elderly, so my articles will be covering as such. The article I am presenting this month is about growing older and the positive aspects. This article is intended to give caregivers a smile. If you are looking for caregiving information at this moment, I invite you to read my past articles.

What did you say? Growing older can be great?

That's right- you heard me correctly. Growing older can be great. I often hear from clients "Growing older means my life is coming to an end." My response, "No, it doesn't. Growing older means your life is just getting started." You are only as "old" as you feel. I use the term "old" lightly because I know many persons that are 60+ that can run 3 miles faster than I ever could ( I am 26)! Does this sound familiar to any of you?

I know that many 55+ are still working, some because of the financial need; some because it is something to keep busy. But whatever the reason, enjoy what you are doing. Go walking, take up gardening, painting, writing. Do what you have ALWAYS wanted to do. Write a list of things that you would like to do. Prioritize and do it. It does not mean your list has to filled with wants, such as a 6 month trip to Europe. Although, wouldn't that be nice if we could all do it? Instead, set realistic goals. Some people may want to go back to school. Some people may want to join a certain club. Some people may want to learn how to ski. Enjoy yourself.

I have a list of 100 reasons why growing older is great! These answers were given by persons 55+. You can view these reasons by going to my web site at: http://www.geocities.com/~elderly-place/list1.html I always enjoy reading this list; I hope you will too. Some answers given on the list are:

*I can follow my bliss.

*My worries are fewer.

*At 82, I'm still dating.

*It's like being a recycles teenager- only better!

*Memories give me material for writing.

*Each new day is a gift.

*Senior portions in restaurants keep me thinner.

*At 90, I've mastered a cane.
