Caregiver Burnout: For Family Members

Stressed: Caregivers may become very stressed. Burnout and stress are very similar, so if a caregiver feels stressed, it is worth looking into the chances of being burnt out.

Withdrawal: Caregivers may shy away from family and/or friends. They put so much time into their loved ones that they do not spend time outside of their home. This could also be a warning sign for depression.

Sleeping Difficulties: Caregivers may find themselves unable to fall asleep. They may be thinking about what they have to do the next day or they may be worried about their loved one in the other room.

Concentration: Caregivers may lack concentration due to the many responsibilities of being a caregiver. Your mind may be thinking about what your loved one needs next and forget what you are currently doing, such as cooking, driving, and shopping. Or, you may find yourself in another world when being spoken to. You find yourself asking others, "What was that?" "What did you say?"

Prevention

1. Research as much as possible about caregiving. If you enjoy the Internet, there are a myriad of resources that you can find concerning all aspects of caregiving.

2. Never be afraid to ask for help. If other family members will not help you, look into community services, such as adult day cares and in-home respite care. Also, join a support group.

3. Know your limits and don't overdo yourself. Set priorities and make lists of what you need to do that day. Don't plan too far ahead, instead, go day by day.

4. Be sure to make time for yourself.

5. If your loved one has a dementing illness such as Alzheimer's, find out about the disease if you haven't already done so. By learning about the disease, you will be able to understand and care for yourself and for your loved one better.
