Caregiver Stress Warning Signs

Stress can be related to several factors. If it is not detected, it can be harmful to you and your loved one. There are several reasons why stress occurs, such as working too much, not sleeping enough, having to deal with family and work at the same time, and not having as many hours in the day that you need to take care of yourself. Over the next three months, I will be focusing on caregiver stress. This article concentrates on the signs of caregiver stress. The next two articles will focus on what you, as a caregvier, can do for yourself. I have also included several useful links concerning this topic. Ten Signs of Caregiver Stress

1. Anger: You be angry at your loved one because you are caring for them. You may be angry at other family members for not helping you.

2. Denial: You think that the current "situation" will get better. It is important as a caregiver to take things day by day. Tomorrow is a new day. Admit to yourself that it won't get better, but that you can help your loved one have a sense of well being.

3. Insomnia: You may feel tired, but cannot sleep. Or, you may not feel tired even if your body is tired.

4. Health Problems: You may catch more flues and colds than usual. This can be common in caregivers who do not take care of themselves, such at eating properly and exercising.

5. Depression: You show signs of depression, such as constant sadness or withdrawal.

6. Anxiety: You may feel anxious to get things done or you may feel that you don't have enough time. Hence, making you want to pull out your hair.

7. Withdrawal: This can occur if you are depressed. You may not wish to see family and friends.

8. Exhaustion: This may occur if you overexert yourself; you may feel run down. This is common in caregivers who receive little or no help from outside sources.

9. Loss of Concentration: This may happen when your mind is to the caregiving role. You are constantly thinking about your loved one and perhaps all of the "what ifs." You find it hard to concentrate at home or at work.

10. Irritability: You may get upset easily. Or, you may get angry over "little" things.
