The purpose of this article is to assist caregivers who are looking for a proper nursing home for their loved one by making suggestions on what you should look for in a home, as well as what to look for after your loved one has been admitted. However, I would like to open your eyes as to what can occur in nursing homes. The nursing home decision is a difficult one and should not be taken lightly. Nursing homes can benefit many loved ones, especially if the caregiver cannot take care of the loved one all day and night. Some believe nursing home placement is wrong, while others believe it is acceptable. Below, I will be providing some possible areas of concern for caregivers. It is meant to be used as a guide. Every nursing home is different. You may visit 5 nursing homes. Three out of the five may not be what you are looking for, while the remaining two may be exactly what you want. Once you have found a nursing home that you are comfortable with, please keep in mind that it is still important to make sure that your loved one is not being mistreated and that your loved one's needs are being met. Even though your loved one will be in a nursing home with nurses and staff caring for them, you are still the caregiver. You have a right to know what is going on in the nursing facility.
