Teaching from Home

There are a few lucky teachers out there who teach from their own homes. They work for the Independent Learning Centers in their province or state. Individual students take courses through correspondence and they are paid to mark assignments, answer questions from students, and make up and mark exams. They don’t have to get up at 6 every morning, don’t have to breath exhaust fumes on crowded highways daily, and don’t have to worry about what they wear or whether their students will recognize them on the weekend. But is the life of such a teacher really all that great?

Yes, because: These teachers don’t have to deal with annoying students. All their students don’t know them and are on their best behavior in hopes of higher marks. These teachers can complete their tasks easily because there are fewer interruptions. They also don’t have to spend as much money, are able to stay home with young children, don’t have to wear professional attire, and don’t have to be good little employees for their principals.

No, because: You have to be really self-motivated. If you are constantly sitting outside drinking cola with your children, you won’t get your marking done. If you are always doing housework you will fall behind. This will hurt your students who already have to wait weeks for their lessons to travel through the mail. If your computer breaks down and you are responsible for online courses, you are in big trouble. Also, you will not meet as many people and will not have the wonderful experience of working directly with eager students. You are unlikely to be promoted because few people will know you and you will not have a lot of distinction. Your students could be getting someone else to do all their work for them and you would never know until they failed the final exam. This can be hard on both of you. Finally, a huge number of your students are apt to drop out and you have to realize that it is not because you are a bad teacher.

Even though the list of negative points is longer than the list of positive points, I feel that it could be a great career for the right person. If you had a laptop and online courses to mark, you could travel all over the world and keep your job at the same time. I think, however, that other teachers would hate the job and that more sociable ones would be better off in the classroom. Retired teachers could especially benefit from a job as an independent learning center teacher.
