Jay Jay Earns His Wings ReviewJay Jay Earns His Wings is one of two Jay Jay the Jet Plane CD-Roms produced by Riverdeep (The Learning Company). This one focuses on nature, numbers, and math. Big Jake, the wise old airplane, tells Jay Jay it's time he had his own route. But first he needs to do a few more training flights. Jay Jay needs to pick up six packages before he gets his own route. The player can visit the six destinations in any order he chooses. Each activity has three levels. At Easy O'Malley's Ranch, the object is to click on the farm animal which matches the verbal clues. At the more difficult levels, the child has to listen to more than one clue to solve the puzzle. It's apple picking time at Smiling Meadow. Level one requires the player to match the color of the apple with the color of the basket. On level two, the player must look at a picture chart and put the correct number and color of apples in each basket. On level three, the pictures are replaced by color coded words. For example Yellow is actually yellow. Again the child needs to follow at the chart to get the apples in the right basket. We found this game slow going, because after you drop each apple in you have to wait for Snuffy to say something before clicking on the next apple. At Lightning Bug Lake, children will learn to match light and sound patterns. The patterns become more complex with each level. Children learn to measure and count at Sandy Landing. A large item appears on the conveyor belt. The child has to click and drag small items over, stacking them up, to see how many small items are the same height as the big item. On level three, the child guesses how many objects it will take before actually measuring the item. Herky the Helicopter is the star of Frosty Pines. Children have to click on the correct number to get Herky to ski and pick up the flags. When Herky collects nine flags, they get the package. On level three, the child has to solve a simple addition problem to know which number to click on. At Ridgeway, the children fill in the puzzle with missing pieces of runway. On the first level the pieces are shape coded. For example the round piece goes in the round hole, the square piece in the square hole, etc. With levels two and three the number of pieces to choose from increases and they are no longer shape coded.
