Attention Shoppers!Hello all. The hectic summer is over and (I think) I'm back on track. Although I missed last month's column, I have been browsing and found three great new shopping sites. Okay they may not be brand new, but I haven't previously featured them in my column or included them in my links. The first is Surplus CD ROM http://www.surpluscdrom.com. All software here is new and either comes in the jewel box or the retail packaging. They have quite a selection at great prices. Shipping and handling is $4.95 and $1.00 for each additional item. I browsed through their bargain section and found a lot of "jewels" in the $9.99 section including Land Before Time Activity Center; Orly's Draw A Story; Backyard Soccer; Pajama Sam 2: Thunder and Lightening Aren't So Frightening; How Many Bugs In A Box; Backyard Baseball; I Can Be A Dinosaur Finder; Logical Journey of the Zoombinis, the Mighty Math Series, and many more quality programs. Please be aware that these are older titles. Double check the system requirements to make sure the software will run on your computer. There are also some $4.99 titles, including many of the Golden Book series. I reviewed several of these when they first came out, and frankly they were a disappointment. If you or your child are very attached to one of the stories and you have an extra $5, one of these might make a nice treat. Basically the story is read aloud in one voice with no animation, and minimal clickables. There are a few games, most of which are dull and sometimes too difficult for the age level. These titles are best if played with your child. However, I think just as much if not more enjoyment can be found from just reading the original books together. Mike Mulligan's Steam Shovel is also included in the $4.99 bargain bin. If your child enjoys trucks and machinary, or you remember the story fondly from your own childhood, I would recommend this title. It has been a favorite at my house for a couple of years. Don't just stick to the bargain bin on this site, there are many other quality titles available. Also they have all the Mac titles in a separate spot for easy browsing. Another new shopping site I found is Software Blowouts http://store.yahoo.com/software-blowouts Their shipping policy is also $4.95 plus $1 for each additional item. And the Mac software is easy to find.
