Four Software Sites to Check Out

© Kay Pluta

If buying commercial software is not in your budget, there are alternatives including freeware and online games. Often companies will leave me comments asking me to check out their sites or products. This month I would like to share these with you.

First, there is Sebran's ABC which is freeware. Unfortunately, there is not a Mac version, and I cannot review it for you. It does look intriguing and teaches numbers, letters, and basic math and reading in twenty languages. Find out more by going to http://www.wartoft.nu/software/sebran/

The second site I'd like to tell you about is http://www.quiz-tree.com Here, you can find dozens of free quizzes on these school subjects: Elementary Math, Fractions, Units of Measurement, Geography, English Spelling, SAT Verbal, Spanish, and Spanish verbs. The sound effects and bright colors make these free quizzes more inviting to children. Windows users may also download a free Quiz Buddy, which includes several features including export to Palm and flash card printing.

Mac users don't despair. I've also been alerted to Kidwidget, a collection of easy to use tools in a protected environment. You receive both a Mac and Windows license with purchase. The tools include draw, paint, flashcards, games, and more. I have downloaded the demo version of this product, which costs $24 to register. I'm sure my boys and I will enjoy exploring it, and we will bring a review for you later. You can learn more about this software at http://www.astoundit.com/products/kidwid... html

Another website I'd like to feature this month is http://www.bagatrix.net This site offers software for Algebra, Pre-Algebra, and Basic Math. One of their products, Basic Math Solved! 2005 was the winner of the 11th annual Best Educational Software Awards for Mathematics. Because it is Windows only, I will not be able to bring you a review of the software, but here http://www.bagatrix.net/reviews.htm is a place to find other reviews.

Thank you to all the companies who left comments. It's always great to discover new software. The children's software industry has changed a lot since I began reviewing software six years ago. Instead of software designed for the home computer, there are more titles for systems such as Game Boy and the Leap Frog Leapster available. Although new computer software titles aren't being developed as rapidly as they were a few years ago, there are a lot of older titles available. Now that I've found my missing software stash, I look forward to bringing you more reviews.
