Cyberchase Carnival Chaos Review

This CD-Rom is based on the PBS cartoon "Cyberchase." Jackie, Matt, Inez, and their cyberbird, Digit are out to defeat Hacker once again. This time Hacker has stolen a Mega Bolt, and it is lost in a Cybersite called R-Fair City. Barker, who runs the city, isn't very happy about the Mega Bolt. It's bounced around a bit and put a hole in his roof. He has it locked up in his safe. He'll only let the kids have it if they do something nice for the townspeople.

The kids have to find six items and take them to the correct person. Each item is earned by playing a game. The games are quite challenging and they teach these skills: estimation of angles, strategic thinking, spatial relationships, deductive reasoning, approximation, logic skills, and proportional thinking.

Bumper Pods is similar to good old-fashioned bumper cards, except here players have to plan on which angle to move their cars. The object is to knock Hacker and the other bad guys out of the game.

Skee Ball requires multiplication and approximation skills. Players score by rolling skee balls into the holes at the end of the alley. You have to score within a certain range in order to win. This requires planning as skee balls carry values of 1/2, 1, 2, 10, and -100 points. Players choose a ball and aim for the hole. The score is the product of the number on the ball and the number on the hole.

Code Cracker teaches reasoning and strategic thinking. The object is to find the hidden pattern of blocks. The pattern includes color and position of the blocks. Players must learn to repeat what they did right and change what didn't work until they discover the pattern.

Bursting Balloons is another strategy game. Use the cyber dart to "pop" three or more adjoining same color balloons until you clear the board. The problem is once balloons are popped the remaining ones shift to take up the space. If players don't plan carefully, they will find them selves stuck and unable to pop any balloons. There are three lifelines that will change the balloons color. If this still doesn't get the players out of the jam, there is a reset button.

Maze Madness covers strategy and spatial reasoning. People are lined up to ride the Whirly Bird. Players have to manipulate the gates in the line so the queue doesn't get too long or too short, and all the riders make it through the line.
