Food? Food? Did somebody say food?
So it goes in The Mammoth Food Dig, and interactive CD-Rom, published by Ohio Distinctive Software. Professor Eggword is exploring a mysterious chamber when he encounters carrots zinging across the room and a giant tomato rolling after him. This opening sequence will grab kid's attention. While the computer generated graphics are simplistic, they are bright, colorful and kid friendly. Like most ODS (Ohio Distinctive Software) programs, The Mammoth Food Dig is a series of multiple choice questions followed by the reward of an arcade like game. There are ten levels of questions. All of them require reading, but in level One the questions are read aloud. Level One is designed for the youngest players and asks students to identify food items as fruit or vegetables. Levels Two through Four are about units of measurement including the metric system. Level Five is about various food facts. Level Six teaches about Calorie Comparison. Levels Seven and Eight are particularly challenging, as players are required to calculate the percentage of fat, protein or carbohydrate calories in a food. Level Nine covers vitamin and mineral content, and Level Ten is about Food Additives. After answering three questions correctly, a key icon lights up. When the player earns six keys, he or she is rewarded with the digging game. In this game, students use arrow keys to move Professor Eggword around the screen. There is a sliding scale on the top of the screen. When the market moves toward the red, the player knows the treasure is close by. There is a time limit on this game, and in addition to hunting for treasure (there is more than one item buried in each game), players have to help Professor Eggword dodge the flying fruit and vegetables. Students can click on the treasure chest to see how many of each kind of food they are collecting. This title is designed for multiple ages which makes it ideal for homeschooling, as well as classroom use. It is also a good choice for any parent who wants his or her children to learn basic nutritional facts. It's great for adults to learn about the nutritional values of food also.
