TWO OLDIES BUT GOODIES

Greetings readers. My computer is going to be put in a packing box this morning, and I won't see if for about a month. So in order to keep this column going, I am bringing you two older reviews in two separate articles.

Franklins Clubhouse Adventure and and Franklin the Turtle Goes to School are based on the popular Franklin books. At one time it was an animated cartoon, but I don't believe it is shown anymore.

I have seen both of these titles on store shelves both on and offline lately, and sometimes find them on clearance or the bargain bin, because they are older titles. However, don't let their "age" scare you off. These are both excellent programs, and as long as they are compatible with your operating system, you should have no problem.

First, let's look at Franklin's Clubhouse Adventures.

After signing in, children learn the Secret Handshake. They have to pay close attention and get all the steps in order because the handshake changes from game to game. Then it's off to the Main Clubhouse to choose from six activities, each of which have three difficulty levels. Then figure out who's who in costume by helping Rabbit find the differences in photos. My son's favorite activity is helping Snail piece together the dinosaur bones found in the sand box. And just how far have you dug in your sandbox lately? Another favorite activity is helping Fox find the Royal Knights. You have to be fast because the characters pop in and out of their hiding places quickly. Bear will teach you how to follow patterns as you make friendship bracelets for the Clubhouse gang. Pick from a variety of backgrounds, borders, and picture stamps to make a unique clubhouse poster. Beaver's Pirate game is also a lot of fun. It takes planning, hand-eye coordination, and some fancy mouse work (pun intended) to get the mice in their paper pirate ships across the pond. Watch out for those crazy leaping frogs and sneaky snakes!

As activities are completed, children earn badges which are kept in their Clubhouse Scrapbook. Your child's self confidence will soar as she or he earns badges for Discovery, Courage, Investigation, Cooperation, Imagination, and Friendship. In addition to the badges, pirate coins collected in Beaver's game and dinosaur cards collected in Snail's Sandbox game are also included in the Scrapbook. Plus, each of the six characters has a non-computer activity to share. These activities include paper hats, room signs, cardboard box space ships, and other things to make.
