Kindergartners in the Computer Lab!

For the kindergarten curriculum, I like to focus on gross and fine motor skills when using the mouse. I would recommend that they use Microsoft Paint or Kid Pix. During the first few sessions, I allow them to draw whatever they want. Once they are more comfortable with the mouse, we dive into writing letters with the mouse and on the keyboard. When they come into the lab, we first practice the penmanship strokes for each letter in the air as a class. Then they create as many of the letters as they can, plus type it once on the keyboard. When they have written the letter to their satisfaction, I have them raise their hands and I take a look at their work. I grade their work and then help them to get to a new page where they can draw whatever they want. If their work does not meet a satisfactory level or they are having difficulty, I work with each individual student.

As the year progresses, I'll teach one or two students something new and have them teach other people in the class. I make sure that each student gets a turn to have the "special" knowledge and be able to teach.
