A Newspaper for Hogwarts

© Stacy Peters-Walters

Objective: Students will be able to create a "Year-End Hogwarts" newspaper based on the activities in Harry Potter & the Sorceror's Stone.

After reading Harry Potter & the Sorceror's Stone, divide your students into groups of 3. Gather all of the groups together for an editors meeting. Explain that each group will be creating a 2-page spread for an assigned portion of the book. As a group, the students will need to write 3 to 4 articles and draw pictures or dress up and take photos to go with the articles. Assign each group a broad topic such as Quidditch or Hagrid's animals.

Once the students have prepared their material, they can develop the 2-page spread on the computer ussing Kid Pix, Publisher, PageMaker or a word processor. You can institute peer editing throughout this process.

You will probably have one to two groups who finish early. These groups can be assigned to develop the front and back covers.

When all of the groups have finished, you can add all of the pages into one newspaper and print it for them.

As an extension, you can assign each group to write and illustrate several ads for their newspaper sections.
