Veterans Day Research Activities

© Stacy Peters-Walters

These Veterans Day activities focus on researching events that have happened in the past. Students can use a variety of sources to find their research. If you have access to a library, I would recommend that students need to find their resources from both the World Wide Web and a library resource other than the encyclopedia. Many students will neglect the wealth of information in the library and just use the Web. Many libraries have access to online card catalogues which can be searched in a similar way as the Web sites.

Students will be able to create a timeline of events that led to the observance of Veterans Day as a national holiday.

1.Students can research information about Veterans Day and World War II on www.yahooligans.com, www.onekey.com/, www.a1source.com/ http://www.salukisearch.com/, . http://www.kidsedge.com/, or www.kidsclick.org.

2. Before working on the computer, brainstorm with your students different keywords that can be used to look up information about Veterans Day and World War II.

3. Give your students notecards before going into the computer lab so that they can write their research on the cards. This is a good idea as many students and adults fall into the habit of copying and pasting information without critically reading it.

4. Once students have the information that they need, they can use a drawing program such as Kids Pix, Word, Paint, Corel Draw or PhotoShop to build their timeline of events.

Students will be able to develop an online newspaper that describes how veterans are honored around the world or in the past.

1. Students can use their research skills from the previous activity to find information about how veterans are honored around the world or how they have been honored in the past. 2. Student can write a newspaper article and in partners build one page of the newspaper. The students can use Kid Pix, Publisher, PrintShop Deluxe, PageMaker or Word. 3. As a group or for just the teacher, the individual pages can be pulled together to make a newspaper that is printed for each child.

Students will be able to develop an electronic presentation in groups describing a specific war, the treatment of veterans after that particular war and the treatment of minority groups such as Hispanic-Americans, African-Americans, American Indians, Asian-Americans and women.

1. Students can use their research skills from the previous activities to find information about how veterans were treated after different wars, including how specific minority groups were treated. 2. Students can create a web page to publish their reports and include photos. There are a variety of web site design programs available such as FrontPage, HotMetalPro, DreamWeaver and GoLive.
