Literature & Technology: Using "Rough-Faced Girl" by Rafe MartinThe picture book, "Rough-Faced Girl" is written by Rafe Martin. This is a Native American Cinderella story. Below are four activities that you can share with your children or your students while reading the book. Lesson One: Story Retelling Grade Level: All Objectives: 1. Students will be able to retell the story of The Rough-Faced Girl in sequence through pictures either verbally or in writing. 2. Students will be able to use a graphics program to re-create a scene from The Rough-Faced Girl. 3. Students will be able to use a word processor to write the summary of their scene. 4. Students will be able to use a word processor to write the story retelling. Procedure: 1. Read The Rough-Faced Girl with your students. 2. As a group, discuss what happened at the beginning of the story, during the middle of the story and at the end of the story. 3. While at their desks, have students think about their favorite part of the story. 4. Students can then write or dictate the rough-draft to summarize their favorite part of the story. 5. In the lab, students can use a graphic editor to draw the scene. 6. During individual computer time or during the lab, students can type their summaries. Younger students may only be able to type their names below their pictures but they can then summarize verbally to the class. 7. When the students have finished typing, they can insert their picture into the word processor, save it and print it. Other Ideas: 1. Students can illustrate a cartoon strip that summarizes the story. Some graphics editors, like Kid Pix, have cartoon segments and speech bubbles already created. 2. Each student can be assigned one section of the story to illustrate and retell. These pictures and text can be put into slides for a PowerPoint presentation. The slides can later be printed out into a class booklet. 3. Students can create “WANTED” posters in which they choose a character from the Rough-Faced Girl to draw picture of and analyze. Lesson Two: American Indian Tribes Grade Level: 2nd/3rd Objectives: 1. Students will be able to locate and paraphrase text in order to answer a question. 2. Students will be able to write to explain key concepts and relationships with other concepts in various subject areas. 3. Students will be able to use the World Wide Web to research information about American Indian tribes. 4. Students will create a web page with information about the American Indian tribe that they researched. Procedure: 1. After reading The Rough-Faced Girl, discuss that there are different tribes of Native Americans with distinct language and cultural differences. 2. Using a map of North America, point out the different tribes.
