Teacher's Net: A Sneak Preview

Are you looking for ways to incorporate technology and the use of the Internet into your curriculum? If so, then Teacher's Net at Suite University is the course for you. This eight-lesson course was developed and is taught by Phebe Durand, a certified Integrated Technology Instructor and curriculum specialist. It has many tips and tricks for ways to incorporate the 'Net into your studies. Here is a bit of what Phebe says in the course introduction:

What are your own students doing with their computers at home? According to a recent EMI Secondary school survey 100% of the students surveyed had a computer at home, and 38 in 44 had an internet connection on that computer.

Are those students using this technology to further their studies? According to this survey, only 27 students used their computer to "Write School Work", while a full 38 use it regularly to "Play Games".

With the ever-increasing role of technology in not only education, but in the workforce as well, we need to prepare our students in the use of it. They need to be able to log on to a computer and access a website for research, head into a word processor and create a report, and go directly into the creation of simple graphics for a cover page. This is so important, given that these tasks are directly related to the needs of the workforce we're preparing them for.

In order to give this direction, though, we need to be able to use technology easily ourselves.

Teacher's Net has you covered. Even if you currently have nothing but the knowledge of how to open programs and type a few sentences, you're going to end this course with the knowledge of how to create an entire technology base for your classroom, including integrated technology lesson plan creation, web quest creation, and even a classroom website. These are specific projects that you will have completed and entirely ready-to-use in your classroom - in one month's time.

Integrating the technology into our own learning, walking through the use of technology in our every-day classroom routines, we gain huge steps toward being able to successfully teach the use of technology to our students. It's not necessary to be an expert. It's not even necessary to have a lot of time - teachers simply do not have time enough - it's only necessary to have the desire to do it. In fact, by the time you've finished this course, you'll likely have more time, because the concepts and goals we will address help to organize all of your most basic functions into more manageable pieces.
