Online Education

Do you live 200 miles from your nearest college or high school? Want to study on your own time, when it's convenient? Confined to your home for any reason? Or are you an adult who cannot attend a regular high school?

If you answered 'yes' to any of these questions and have access to the internet, then studying online is probably a more feasible way of obtaining the education you want.

Online "virtual" education has become increasingly popular over that last year or so, with a lot more electronic schools and universities opening their doors to the cyber world. This provides us with a whole new range of opportunities for education. Many universities are now offering accredited units on the internet, and usually you can put these units towards your degree.

Doing an online course has many advantages. You can choose your school, get the best teachers, even do a course before it is offered at your local university or college regardless of where you live. The are no classes to attend, no schedules to keep and you can begin your course at any time. Most important of all, you network with the widest possible learning community.

Some Online Schools I have come across in my net travels are:

The Virtual High School - is located in Canada, but provides high school credits to students throughout the world. As the student proceeds through the course(s), they participate in formative online evaluation processes, group discussions, and of course e-mail contact with their teacher.

Online Education - is a joint project between four universities; Charles Sturt (Australia), Oxford Brookes (England), Uni. of Paisley (Scotland) and the Uni. of Lincolnshire and Humberside (England). Courses offered include; Hospitality, Business, Marketing, Finance and Health.

The Graduate School of America - offers both Masters and Doctorates on a variety of subjects including; Education, Management and Human Services. All of these courses are fully accredited. This is the most professional online campus I have come across and strongly suggest that you definitely have a look at this one.

Ziff Davis University - offers a wide range of computer and technology courses. Unlike the other campuses, ZDU charges for time, (US$4.95 per month), and not for courses. This means you can do a number of courses at the same time for the same price. Depending on the topic, ZDU offers two ways to learn: either with others via instructor-led classes or on your own with self-led tutorials.
