Schools on the WebIt is great to see that so many schools around the world now have their own web site! The Internet is a great tool, and needs to be taken for granted! There are numerous directories around that list school sites. Some of them are: • Web66, http://web66.coled.umn.edu/schools.html • ECIS, http://www.ecis.org/directories/schools/index/index.htm • K12Schools.Com, http://www.k12schools.com If your school is without a web site then you need to get one and let your school be seen! The first thing you need to do is design your site. This can be done with special software, or programmed from scratch in HTML using a text program. If you are a beginner at HTML, then using a web publishing program is definitely the way to go. There are numerous packages available, some of the best being: • Adobe PageMill, http://www.adobe.com/ • Claris Homepage, http://www.claris.com/ • Microsoft FrontPage, http://www.microsoft.com/ All of this packages are available for Macintosh and Windows operating systems and significant discounts apply for educational institutions. When the site is finished you need to put it on the Web. There are a few choices for how you want to do this.... Have the site hosted by your ISP, get a virtual server from a hosting company like NetNames, or use a free service like GeoCities. With the virtual server option, you will be able to obtain a domain in the .edu name space. These domains are free in most countries around the world. For example at www.myhighschool.edu or www.myhighschool.edu.au. Once your site is online, you can check its compatibility across all browsers/platforms at http://www.websitegarage.com/ and make any necessary changes. It will check everything from spelling to finding dead links. If you come across some outstanding school web sites, please do let me know so they can be part of a future article. For the last couple of articles I have been running a competition to win a copy of the up and coming book, The Prentice Hall Directory of Online Education Resources. Cynthia Duda is the winner of this great book. Congratulations, Cynthia, and thanks to all who entered! - GE
