So what are some of the other new vegetable varieties for 2001(besides the new tomato and pepper varieties mentioned last month)? Well, let us get right into it - no beating around the Bush...

Beans (lol) HMX 5991 - a new gourmet green bush bean variety with outstanding taste rivalling the best beans on the market. The beans are highly productive and grow 5 to 6 inches long on compact bush plants which have shown superior tolerance to common bean diseases. resistance. You can expect to begin harvesting these beans 60 days from planting. Finding them might not be too easy - the only place I know they are available is from Harris Seeds.

Beets Chariot - a new great tasting hybrid early beet variety that's ready in about 52 days. The beets are globe shaped and smooth skinned with a deep red colour throughout. They have demonstrated a great ability hold their shape well even in crowded conditions. Production is highly uniform and the plant has attractive upright foliage.

Cabbage Gonzales - this is a new mini cabbage from Johnnys Selected Seeds. It forms blue-green very compact dense heads that would be particularly suitable for single or two people households. This variety also shows good holding ability in the garden(no splitting). For uniform, compact , well formed heads, space the plants 8 to 12 inches apart.

Cantaloupe Parks Whopper Hybrid - here is another great sounding "Whopper" introduction from Parks Seeds - a very early, great tasting cantaloupe that would be an excellent choice for anyone living in a short season area. This melon matures in just 77 days! And we are not talking little baseball size melons, but 6 to 8 pound whoppers with firm but juicy flesh and very sweet taste. It also shows resistance to Fusarium races 0-1, &2, and Powdery Mildew races 1& 2.

Carrot Candy Stick - an exclusive new F1 carrot variety from NK Lawn and Garden. The outstanding feature of this carrot is its high sugar content(and thus its name) The roots are very bright orange, slender and grow to 10 inches long. Maturity is 72 days.

Chicory Indigo - At 70 days, this Italian chicory or "radicchio" is one of the earliest maturing varieties available to the home gardener. It produces uniform high quality medium sized dense heads that are bright red with very white veins.

Corn Honey Select Yellow - an All America Selection winner for 2001. Cross country trials have shown this variety to be a consistent producer of tender, sweet, honey flavoured corn that can be harvested over a longer period of time without loss of flavour and eating quality. It is a triplesweet variety producing 8 inch long ears with a 16 row count. Widely available.
