Storing Carrots

Oct 29, 2000 - © Vic Ferri

If you're using a cool cellar, here are a couple of other storage methods, recommended by the National Gardening Association. Put the carrots in a plastic trash bag, punch a few small holes in it, tie up the top and store the bag. Or, put your roots into a trash barrel with a plastic liner, put the lid on and store the whole thing! Storage life is usually 2 to 4 months.

And now for a tip: Don`t ever store your carrots with fruits such as apples or pears. These fruits release a ripening gas called ethylene that can cause the carrots to turn bitter and sprout hair-like roots.

If you'd like to learn more about carrots, be sure to check out the Carrot Museum, a great site devoted soley to carrots.
