is deep and slow-moving enough and the water level does not fluctuate drastically. Even without this influence, they alter the ecosystem drastically. In places where the beaver changes water flow, it has an even more profound effect.

Next month's article, "Beaver: ecosystem engineer," will explore how this creature creates and modifies habitats. In fact no other animals except man alters its environment more profoundly. This has an essential effect on the diversity of species in its community.
