Friend: "So they'll learn more about the Telecom Industry."

Me: "So what?"

Friend: "So they'll be better informed."

Me: "So what?"

After a gazillion "so whats" and twenty minutes later, it came out that readers will be able to improve their chances of earning more money in the stock market after studying the Telecom industry ebook -- less guesswork, right?

Then again, if my friend were writing for investment stock analysts, the main benefit would be so that analysts can gain credibility and additional clients.

Know to whom you are writing.

I guess that's a key point to remember when agonizing over how to make a web page sound more interesting. You have to know to whom you're writing. Please don't say "for everyone" because out here on the Internet the more focused you become, the better you will reach the intended audience.

I mean, would teenagers be interested in a Telecom Report? Not really? Guess again.

What if we position it this way: Get high grades and still have time to party -- Telecom Industry data you can access right now for your last-minute school report. (Or words along those lines.)

In this case, you are after teenagers who need to finish their business industry research papers and still have a social life.

Let's say you are writing a Children's Story of an ebook. Who is your reader? A child? Or a mom? Why would a parent want to get your ebook?

  • To get their kids more interested in reading?
  • To boost their children's listening skills?
  • To nurture parent-child relationships?
  • To heighten their child's sense of color?

Yes, thinking differently and from the perspective of your potential ebook customers takes a lot of practice. And a lot of reading. Here are a few more tips you can try:

  1. Go to http://www.google.com and search for "make money."
  2. Read the Classified Ads of your newspapers
  3. Read Catalogs
  4. Read Junk Mail / Flyers

Listen Up:

By immersing yourself in direct response advertising, you'll get insights on what makes consumers tick. Remember Stephen Covey's Seek First To Understand, And Then Be Understood? Hmmm... maybe he's an ebook writer too.

Anyway, it's been fun having you with me on this online learning journey. Next month, we'll tackle the issue of how our ebooks can stand out in an electronic sea of web sites. Until next time, keep reading and keep seeing things through the eyes of others.
