It's just a joke

© Betty O. Spangle

Is it wrong for a fat person to joke about themselves? I love to make jokes, and the idea of being witty is intoxicating. I believe I missed my calling as a stand up comedienne. (Or, maybe I was just too tired to stand up)

When I tell jokes about my weight it is not because I feel that I am inferior, it's because it's funny.

I told a friend the other day that I loved the idea of walking along the beach with my husband. However, with my body weight, and the sand problem (sinking with every step) the actual event is just not exactly the way I would picture it in my mind.

So, I told her that my dream of being a baywatch model, running freely down the beach, would never happen. That is, unless somethat set the beach on fire while I was on it. Then I would run for sure.

Instead of laughing, well, actually, after laughing, she told me that I should give her a nickel every time I said something negative about myself. I didn't realize I was being negative. I thought I was being charming, in a satirical kind of way.

While I do believe that overweight women should love themselves a lot more, and that society should be more accepting and less harsh, I do think fat people should be allowed to have a sense of humor about who they are. It is no different, to me, than a polish person telling a polish joke. It is not fact nor evidence, nor condemnation, it is a joke. That's all.

Or, is it?

Is it funny to tell any type of stereotypical, social based, flaw pointing joke?

Well. Yes, and no. If you are the person who is blind, and you think a Ray Charles joke is funny, then tell it. Laugh at it. Relate to it. But, if I tell one, and I am not blind, it may still be funny but it also becomes a little cruel, and potentially inappropriate. Will I still tell that joke? Maybe. However, what if I am in a crowded restaurant and another person tells a fat joke? Is it still funny?

Well, it might be, but it is embarrassing and not being told as humor, in this case it is being told as punishment. That is a totally different scenerio. Even if the person telling the joke is fat, it is still inappropriate and way out of line.
