A few years ago I was thinking about my father, and his passing away at a young age. (My father died January 1997 at the age of 60)
While contemplating this I wrote a poem about aging and the stages we go through in our lives. To me the seasons can be representative of the changes in our lives. Are the stages, transitionally, easy? No. The stages of our lives can be a very difficult adjustment for everyone and anyone. Change is always hard, especially when it involves your lifestyle and dreams. As young children our lives are generally filled with wonder, excitement, questions, and hope. We understand very little about our selves and our surroundings, yet we somehow believe that everyone is good and everything will be fine. As young adults our lives are filled with potential, wishes, dreams, and anticipation. We have finally reached an age that we can do something about our future, and we are eager to begin. Many of our goals and lifelong ambitions are set into motion during this time. As we enter our middle years we tend to introspectively search for life’s answers. Why do men and women think differently? Why must we die? What happens to the other sock in the dryer? Many of our values and ideas of faith and morality are questioned during this period. As our life begins to head down the hill, and we begin to enter our truly senior adult years, we realize that much of our life has been wasted worrying about what others think, how we look, and how much money we have. While these things are important, in their own right, they are not the be all and end all of our existence. It’s a shame that we can not realize this during our young adult life, when we are still young enough to spend that extra time with our kids, and less time worrying about that really, really important project. We see our past, present and future so much clearer when we have those wise years of experience behind us. Now that I have waxed poetic about our ever changing life perspective, here is the poem I wrote in retrospect of my father’s life. I hope that you enjoy it, and that you will take a little time to enjoy all of the seasons of your life.
