A mind is a terrible thing to wasteDiabetes is a terrible disease. It robs you of your energy, your youth, your freedom, and, in the extreme cases, your life. But, for me, it's just like the old joke, "Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most." Now, I was thinking about this today, and I know that when I eat things that are too high in sugar, my thinking becomes a bit cloudy, and I am irritated. So, what's left of my mind thought, I wonder if it's that way for everyone? Does what we eat effect how we think. You know, momma did always say that fish was brain food. So, what does that make potato salad? I joke, but I intend for this message to be a serious one. What we eat does effect how we feel, how we act, and how we think. Are you using your mind to it’s full potential, or do you wake up to caffeine and go to sleep to chocolate? Do you feel as sharp and quick witted as you did when you were a child? A teenager? Last week? What foods are good for you? Do I look like I know? Sorry, the potato chips make me edgy. Foods that are good for our minds are many, and varied. Fruit: Apples, Oranges, Strawberries, Blueberries, Pears, Bananas, Watermelon, and Cantaloupe are just a few of the delicious fruits that can be good for us. The best of the best is apples. These are nature’s answer to a beautiful day. Don’t believe me? Eat an apple tomorrow morning, when you first wake up, and see how much more alert and content you feel. I have tried this one, and was amazed. I thought I needed caffeine to get through the day, and since I don’t drink coffee, a soft drink was the solution. An apple woke me up MORE and didn’t make me feel sluggish or irritable, or nervous. This is truly a miracle fruit. Try it, you’ll see. Vegetables: Cucumbers, Carrots, Broccoli, Green Beans, Cauliflower, Asparagus, Spinach, and all green leafy vegetables, Tomatoes, Bell Pepper, Onion, all of these are wonderful! Did you know that onion works as a natural heart medicine. It boosts your immune system and promotes healthy arteries. The smell still sucks, but the vegetable might save your life. Eat plenty of these vegetables, and your thinking will soon be as crisp and fresh as your new celery! Grains: Ok, here comes the bad news. There’s no way to tell you, but straight out. Most grains are not good for us, body, mind or soul. However, this does not mean I want you to eat only protein and nuts. No, I am aware that grains are important, but the kind of grains you choose makes your health either better, or worse. Rice is good, brown rice is better. White bread is ok, whole wheat is better. Pasta is good, but should be limited because of the Glycemic index. So, yeah, I guess what they say is true. You can’t have your cake and eat it too. Well, ok, maybe just a little piece, to keep the world in it’s proper perspective.
